Our classes at East High School are centered around our district-wide implemented ELOs.
We approach our studio classes with the Discipline Based Art Education (Getty, 1991) model. DBAE looks to blend Art Making, Art Aesthetics, Art Criticism, and History. These four themes are anchors in all of our classes and are embedded in each unit and lesson. DBAE combined with our standards drives our work and discussion in our classrooms at East. We believe that every student is able to learn and become a successful artist in the art room. Our classes do not require that students must be "talented" in visual art to participate and contribute. The scaffolding found in our curriculum builds upon skill and technique in fun and challenging projects available for all students. Our curriculum encourages and fosters higher order thinking skills. In formal analysis, many of our critiques and evaluations include most if not all of the following elements: Description, Analysis, Interpretation, and Evaluation. To put it another way, our coursework objectives include expectations for high levels of rigor and quality, while also encouraging creativity for all students in a fun and engaging way! |
